The Human Rights Act (HRA):
The European Convention on Human Rights, in full Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, is a convention adopted by the Council of Europe in 1950 to guard fundamental freedoms and human rights in Europe.
The Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA) incorporates the European Convention on Human Rights into UK domestic law. It came into effect in 2000.
The Human Rights Act 1998 is only binding on public authorities such as government departments. Any individual who felt his rights violated could take a case to European Court of Human Rights.
